A NORTH-East university has been given an excellence award for its work with schoolchildren.

Durham University Library's learning team was given the Sandford Award, which is presented for excellence in heritage education, for its programme at Palace Green Library and the Oriental Museum.

Durham University Library’s Learning Team are celebrating being awarded the prestigious Sandford Award for Excellence in Heritage Education for their schools programme at both Palace Green Library and the Oriental Museum.

The team works with more than 20,000 children and young people from across the region each year using the university's historic collections to teach a diverse range of subjects including Ancient Egypt, Prehistory, China, the Romans in Britain, Anglo-Saxons and the First World War.

Dr Sarah Price, head of engagement and learning, said: “I am delighted that the team have been given this accolade which reflects their hard work and determination in ensuring that each student has fun whilst they learn.

“Our visits programme has never been more popular and we look forward to working with many more schools next year.”

Karen Wiseman, visiting Sandford judge, praised the team for its good and varied selection of educational visits.

She added: “The Durham University learning team are very pleasant, capable and keen to give schools the visit they need to support their work in class. I recommend schools to visit.”
