A NORTH-EAST charity which offers psychotherapy for veterans has been presented with an award as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Veteran’s at East, which is based in Durham City, provides support for veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder [PTSD] or other combat-related mental health issues.

Founder Garreth Murrell was presented with the Queen's Award by Sue Snowdon, the Lord-Lieutenant for County Durham.

Mr Murrell set up the charity six years ago and now has three offices in the region, each of which has its own dedicated therapist.

Sir John Burn, one of the charity’s patrons, said: “Without new and innovative organisations such as Veterans at Ease carrying out the important work that they do in and for their communities, there would be a bigger series of issues now facing other organisations such as the police and judicial system, not to mention the impact suicide has on families and the wider community.

“Veterans at Ease has helped save the lives of at least 17 veterans by filling a much needed gap in specialist services and I am proud to support them, they fully deserve this award”.
