UNIVERSITY students are invited to apply to become a choral scholar at Durham Cathedral.

The Cathedral’s choir, which has existed since 1093, includes boy and girl choristers, lay clerks and six choral scholars.

Three new choral scholars are needed: one alto, one tenor and one bass.

The new recruits would sing daily Evensong and weekly Sunday services, plus at festival such as Easter and Christmas, and join the choir on international tours.

James Lancelot, the master of the choristers and Cathedral organist, said: “This is a golden opportunity for university students who are good musicians with fine voices, first-class sight-reading skills and the commitment and ability to form part of a close-knit team.

“The choir sings a wide, varied and constantly changing repertoire of music such spans most of the centuries; music has been written specially for the Cathedral by John Taverner, Francis Grier, John Casken, John Rutter, James MacMillan and others.

“Besides all this, the choir adults are a sociable team who play a unique part in music-making in Durham both inside and outside the Cathedral.”

Applications are open for starting in October. The closing date is Monday (February 15). For more information, email: music@durhamcathedral.co.uk or visit durhamcathedral.co.uk/worshipandmusic/cathedral-choir
