A CITY’s indoor market is inviting visitors to take a closer look at its range of goods and services as part of an open day series.

The Durham Markets Company is among the organisations agreeing to participate in this year’s Heritage Open Days extended weekend, giving the public a different view of often ageing, historic buildings which are generally off-limits or only allow limited access.

Free tours of the Victorian-built Market Hall will run daily, at 11.30am, between Thursday and Saturday, September 10 - 12.

Colin Wilkes, Durham Markets’ managing director, will guide visitors beyond the 50 stalls, explaining the history of the site, how the market came into existence, and how it has evolved into the heart of Durham’s modern-day independent retail community.

Mr Wilkes said: “This is not only a fascinating Victorian building, but the land it stands on also has an interesting past.

“Back in 1851, an Act of Parliament led to the creation of the Market Hall.

“During the tour there’s a chance to find out what Durham was like in the mid-19th Century, why the Market Hall was very much needed, and the part it has played in the city, in the 160 years since.”

Tour numbers are limited and must be reserved in advance.

Reservations can be made via email to durhammarkets@yahoo.co.uk, or by ringing 0191-384 6153.
