THREE people were hurt after a collision near Consett yesterday lunchtime (Saturday).

Emergency services were called to the A691 between Lanchester and Consett at 1.16pm after reports of a head-on collision.

The accident involved a Seat Mii car travelling west and a Ford Focus C-Max going in the opposite direction.  

Police said the Seat driver, a 19-year-old local man, lost control and crossed the carriageway, colliding with the Ford.

The Seat driver suffered stomach and leg injuries.

The driver of the Ford, a 69-year-old man, was left with a broken leg, arm and head injuries which are described as serious.

The front seat passenger of the Ford, a 67-year-old woman, suffered a broken foot and facial injuries.

Both are from the Stocksfield area of Northumberland.

All three injured people were taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle for treatment, one by air ambulance.

One of the casualties had to be released from a vehicle by the fire brigade using specialist cutting equipment.
