A COMMUNITY is pulling together to raise money for charity.

Over 60 mothers, children and staff from Bishop Ian Ramsey School in Medomsley, near Consett, are taking part in The Race for Life in aid of Cancer Research on June 7.

The Bishop Ian Ramsey Mammies Charity Afternoon is also being held that day at the school from 2pm-5pm.

It has been organised by 38-year-old Claire Liston, who is being treated for breast cancer herself.

Mrs Liston, a mother-of-two and maths teacher at the Thorp Academy in Ryton, said: “The work of Cancer Research UK has been fundamental in improving medical understanding of cancer and its appropriate treatment so I wanted to show my support and gratitude.

“What better way than to organise a fun day for the children, while raising money for a fantastic charity.

“The support for me and my family has been wonderful, but this is also in recognition of all of the other people close to us all who have had a cancer diagnosis.”

The fun day includes a raffle with over 60 prizes, tombola, teddy tombola, games, face painting, glitter tattoos, balloon modelling, cakes, refreshments, free NHS health checks and with all proceeds going towards Cancer Research UK.

Mrs Liston added: “I would like to thank so many local businesses for their kind raffle donations. Everyone is welcome at the charity afternoon.”
