MORE than 30 people have been injured after a coach travelling from Gateshead crashed on the M1 on Tuesday.

Derbyshire Police have declared a major incident following the accident near Mansfield.

The East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust said there were 36 patients in total.

Three people were taken by road ambulance to Chesterfield Royal Hospital, while one was taken to hospital by air ambulance.

A further seven “walking wounded” were taken to the Chesterfield Royal Hospital by minibus, while 19 people were taken to a “place of safety”.

Several vehicles and a coach, operated by National Holidays, were involved in the pile up on the M1 South between Junction 29 and 29A.

The southbound section of the M1 has been closed at Junction 30 while police and fire crews continue to work at the scene.

A Derbyshire police spokesman said: “We will be on the scene, along with other emergency services, for the foreseeable future so drivers need to be prepared for long delays unless they find an alternative route.”
