A CONCERT at Sage Gateshead involving choirs from across the North-East had to be suspended before the end on Saturday (March 28) after three performers were taken ill.

The performers were given medical treatment at the venue by medical staff and have made a full recovery. Sage Gateshead are investigating the incident in which heat, exhaustion and dehydration are believed to have been factors.

One audience members was also taken ill but this is thought to be due to a separate, pre-existing medical condition.

About 900 people were attending a Choral Spectacular that attracted 26 choirs from the region.

In a statement, a spokesman from the Sage said the incident was being investigated.

A statement said: “On Saturday night a performance from the National Association of Choirs was cut short by Sage Gateshead when it became clear that three performers felt unwell towards the end of the concert.

“This was an exceptionally rare occurrence in the ten years that we have been proving large scale concerts for all ages, but it goes without saying that the wellbeing of everyone who comes to Sage Gateshead is our top priority.

“As is always true when it comes to our events, medical staff were on-hand and we have since spoken to the performers who felt ill and are assured that all are at home, resting, and well.

“We were glad to be able to deal with this incident quickly and effectively.”

The statement added: “Subsequent concerts have passed without incident but, as part of a constant review of our safety procedures, we will be conducting a full investigation into Saturday’s event.”
