YOUNGSTERS who have all played a live baby Jesus in a North-East nativity met up for the latest show this year.

Haswell and District Mencap once again staged its annual event at Durham Cathedral.

To celebrate the tenth anniversary of using a live baby, they invited the previous ten children who have played the role to come along.

This year Jesus was played by ten-week-old Ruby Williams, from Chester-le-Street in County Durham.

The organisation’s chief executive Hayley Hood said: “Every year we try to do something different so we had the idea to bring them all back.

“We just thought it would nice for their parents and families. When all ten walked down the aisle to When a Child is Born there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. It was absolutely lovely.

“When I put Baby Jesus in the manger she started to cry a bit so I popped a dummy in and she settled for a bit and started again because she was hungry so I fed her a bottle.

“The Bishop of Jarrow said it was one of the funniest things he had seen, Baby Jesus in the stable being fed by a bottle.”

The show is made up and adults and children, some of whom suffer from learning disabilities and some who do not.

Ms Hood said: “It is to show how inclusive we are. It is quite unique.”
