POLICE and fire experts are looking into the cause of a blaze which badly damaged an unoccupied house.

The fire and rescue service received a report of the blaze, at a terraced house in Wingate, County Durham, shortly after 7pm on Sunday (November 23).

Four crews attended and, on arrival, the downstairs of the property, in North Road West, was well alight, but with the use of four pumps it was brought under control.

Six firefighters wore breathing kits, but there was no suggestion that anyone was present in the house.

The “stop” message was declared shortly after 8pm, by which time the house had undergone widespread internal damage.

Durham Police confirmed it was informed of the blaze and officers were liaising with the fire service today (Monday November 24) to investigate the cause.
