PUPILS at a Chester-le-Street school have been delving into the past to learn about the First World War.

Youngsters at Roseberry Primary and Nursery School, Pelton, secured a £5,100 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help them research the conflict.

They have been delving into the archives to find old documents, artefacts and photographs to build up a picture of what life was like.

They have shared what they found out with the community by holding a series of open sessions at the school to talk about their discoveries, display their written and art work and put on performances all about the Great War.

The children visited local museums and worked with archivists to find about the lives of soldiers from their area.

Headteacher June Lee said: “The funding provided pupils with a fantastic opportunity to help us to educate, not only our children, but members of the local community, about the effects of the First World War and how it shaped our society.

“The children have thoroughly enjoyed exploring artefacts, photographs and documents in order to gain a good understanding of what life was like during the war and they were looking forward to showing what they have done.”
