ONE of the biggest military parades a city has seen in years is to take place next month.

The parade will take place through Durham on November 9 to mark Remembrance Sunday and commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.

Led by The Rifles, successor to the Light Infantry and Durham Light Infantry, the parade will include troops from many regiments and corps of the British Army including the Queen’s Royal Lancers, the Royal Artillery, Royal Regiment of Scotland and the Foot Guards.

James Ramsbotham, honorary Colonel of The Rifles in County Durham, said: “This year’s parade will be a very positive reaffirmation of the strong links between the city of Durham and the Rifles, and we are pleased to welcome other units of Her Majesty’s forces as we mark the centenary of the Great War and the 70th anniversary of D-Day this year”.

The Armed Forces will be led on parade by the Band and Bugles of Durham Army Cadet Force, who will provide a display of military music.

The parade will march through the Market Place just after 11.30am and organisers are hoping for large crowds of people from Durham City and beyond.
