A £50m scheme to build accommodation for 440 students in Durham city centre has been unveiled at a public consultation event.

Dozens of residents dropped in to the Gala Theatre to see an exhibition detailing proposals for 311 studios and 24 “cluster flats” at 18-29 Claypath.

The scheme by Student Castle would involve demolishing the existing buildings, which are home to Oldfields restaurant, Kwik Fit, Durham City Snooker Club and Warm Sanctuary - which it is understood would relocate to new premises.

The new complex would be up to seven storeys at the rear and three at the frontage onto Claypath.

Student Castle managing director Edward Cade said the plans make an “architectural improvement”.

Initial reaction was mixed, with some residents welcoming the improvements it would bring about on the streetscape, but questioning the benefits to locals.

Fred Adamson said: “If it would release housing for families in the city that would be good but I just don’t see that happening.”

Mr Cade said: “The response has been very positive in parts.

“It’s going to be very important in terms of what we deliver in a number of senses, including architectural quality and the management of the scheme.

“We will be delivering a high quality product in a central and sustainable location that is going to be attractive to students and start to help release housing stock in the local housing market for local people.”
