CHILDREN’S favourites Charlie and Lola dropped in to meet some of the region’s youngest performers at the weekend as they embarked on a national tour.

Charlie and Lola’s Extremely New Play is at Northern Stage during October half-term.

Children taking part in Open Stages – weekly drama workshops with a professional director to create an original piece of theatre based on their ideas – met the CBeebies TV stars before final rehearsals for their half- term performance.

Lilly Madine, seven, of Morpeth said: “I liked holding the puppets and moving their eyes.”

The show follows the success of Charlie and Lola’s Best Bestest Play, which thrilled thousands of children, including those of celebrities such as Nicole Kidman, Geri Halliwell and Simon Pegg.

Charlie and Lola appear as cut-out cartoon characters in the same magical world they inhabit in the books and TV series.

Charlie and Lola’s Extremely New Play lasts one hour and 15 minutes with interval and is ideal for ages over three.

The show is on at Northern Stage from Tuesday, October 28 to Thursday, October 30.

It is part of a week of family entertainment during October half-term, including a special Open Stages performance on Saturday, October 25 at 3pm.
