A SINGER-songwriter is to perform a gig next week to raise money for children with disabilities in rural Uganda.

Northumberland-based Gareth Davies-Jones is to perform at West Grange Farm, in Shincliffe, Durham, on Friday, October 3 starting at 7.30pm.

The event is one of three gigs the musician will play across the region organised by Global Care North East, a group of local volunteers supporting the work of international children’s charity Global Care.

They have set themselves a three-year target to find more child sponsors, and to raise £3,200 each year for The Ark day centre in northern Uganda.

John Scott, chair of Global Care North East, said: “There is still enormous stigma surrounding disability, about whether it’s a curse or an accident of nature, which means children with disabilities are still hidden away.

“They may not even leave the house, and are simply left unsupervised. Yet in a facility like The Ark they not only receive proper care and attention, but also treatment and support, which can make a radical difference to their prospects.

“We hope lots of people will come along and listen to Gareth, and help us increase support for this very worthwhile cause.”

Tickets for the gig cost £10 and are available from johnannescott@gmail.com or on the door.
