A FORMER nurse celebrated her 100th birthday recently, surrounded by friends and family.

Born in Darlington in January 1912, Wynne Knowles trained as a children’s nurse in Hull.

She spent time looking after wounded servicemen in Hexham and Sedgefield, during the Second World War.

She married Herbert Knowles in 1944 and they lived in Lincoln and Reading until he became North Yorkshire’s county architect – and she was able to move back to the North - where she says the people are much friendlier.

Mrs Knowles, who has lived in Northallerton since the early Fifties, has two sons - Peter and Charles, a daughter - Carole, and five granddaughters who all live in the Darlington area.

A keen bridge player, she has only recently given up playing with the Northallerton Bridge Club which she was a member of from its early days and along with her various bridge partners, she won many trophies through it.

As an avid gardener, she now takes great pleasure in watching the plants and shrubs flowering over the seasons.
