Visitors staying at farm can help with lambing


CITY slickers and townies can swap their briefcases and mobile phones for wellies and a shepherd’s crook to enjoy a real James Herriot experience.

Lovesome Hill Farm, on the outskirts of Northallerton, North Yorkshire, only a few miles from the famous vet’s old stamping ground, is offering visitors the chance to get involved in country matters.

While staying at the farm and mucking in with the general duties, visitors will also be expected to help deliver lambs from the 100-strong flock of sheep.

Mary Pearson, of Lovesome Hill Farm, said: “My husband, John, is up at about 2am, but we don’t expect the guests to be up that early, although they are very welcome to if they want.

“It is up to them how they experience it. Some may want to merely observe a lamb being born, others may want to hold a newborn lamb, and some may want to help with the birthing. It’s a really good opportunity for people to learn about where food comes from. It doesn’t just appear on the shelves in supermarkets, there is a long process and this is a good opportunity to see where the process starts.

“I think people who have an interest in farming will come along, but I also think that people who fancy something very different may come for a mini-break.”

Mr Pearson said: “We’ve just started these lambing breaks and we’re thrilled with how popular it’s becoming.

“The whole family can experience life on the farm during one of our busiest times of the year.”
