Police to give speeding drivers lessons

POLICE in North Yorkshire are hoping to slam the brakes on speeding drivers - by teaching them the error of their ways.

Motorists caught speeding could be offered the chance of taking a police led driving awareness course.

North Yorkshire Police is looking into spending 12,985 on setting up a new system.

At present the rural force is one of the few nationally which does not offer drivers the chance to take up a speed awareness course.

If the scheme goes ahead, motorists caught speeding just a few mph above the limit will be the first to benefit from April.

The course would be run by an outside body and will cost 69 to take part.

The plan is to be discussed by the North Yorkshire Police Authority on Friday.

An application for funding to cover the costs, if the scheme is approved, would be made to the 95 Alive Road Safety Partnership - a local consortium made up of several organisations, including North Yorks County Council, which aims to cut road deaths by a third.
