TROUBLED former footballer Paul Gascoigne was escorted to a hotel in the region by police following a night in the cells.

The former England player was bailed after he and another man were arrested on suspicion of being drunk in charge of a car on Sunday night.

After his release from a North Yorkshire police station at lunchtime yesterday, Gascoigne was taken in a police van to the Blackwell Grange hotel, Darlington, with a motorcycle escort.

A police spokesman said arrangements had been made for a man to be taken to the hotel, before getting a taxi to Darlington railway station.

Gascoigne’s current whereabouts have not been confirmed.

The 42-year-old former Newcastle and Middlesbrough player was arrested at the Regency Pizza takeaway in Leeming Bar, near Northallerton, North Yorkshire, after reports of a disturbance at 9.10pm on Sunday.

Gascoigne, originally from the Dunston area of Gateshead, and another man, aged 40, spent the night in custody.

A police spokesman also made a statement about Gascoigne being driven to Darlington, and said: “Due to the vulnerable state of one of the two men who were arrested at Leeming Bar on Sunday, it was decided that the best course of action was to drive them to Darlington in an effort to help them get home safely by train.”

The owners of the takeaway declined to comment.

Gascoigne’s arrest came after he was fined for being drunk and disorderly in Newcastle in December.

The former England midfielder has battled with alcohol and drugs, and was detained three times in 2008 under the Mental Health Act.
