Council defers decision over housing dispute

ACTION on a plan to build a house on land where three trees have been cut down in a conservation area is on hold.

Locals are angry over the tree felling on land at Kirkby Lane, Kirkby Fleetham, and the plan to build a home there.

They feel the detached two storey property will mean the site is overdeveloped and it will mean an increase in traffic.

Hambleton District Council is considering the house plan and also the claim over the trees but as two separate issues.

The plot to be developed is within the Kirkby Fleetham Conservation Area.

The chopping of the trees in a conservation area is an offence and legal action could result with the applicant made to plant similar trees and fined.

Alison Booth, vice chairwoman of Kirkby Fleetham Parish Council, spoke at the district council’s development management committee meeting last week.

She said: "This is a rural village and any development should be sympathetic to it.

"This is too high a building for a conservation area and it will over look neighbouring properties."

The district council’s development management committee has decided to defer making a decision on the plan but recommends approval.

The applicant refused to comment on the plans or the tree felling.
