STORE staff were in the pink yesterday, limbering up for tomorrow's latest Race for Life event.

The workforce at Tesco Extra, in Durham City, took up the challenge to wear pink in the lead-up to Cancer Research UK's women-only fun runs at Maiden Castle, on the outskirts of the city.

Many female members of the Dragonville branch's 600 staff will take part in the Race for Life, and some workers got in the mood by wearing pink wigs, clothing, accessories and adornments.

It was not only the women workers who joined in the fun - their male counterparts entered into the spirit by sporting pink ties and shirts.

Everyone wearing pink paid £1 and this will be added to £230 donated to Cancer Research UK from store manager Mark Smith's charity fund, and cash collected from customers.

Amanda Indian is one of a dozen members of the customer services staff who will take part in the 5km runs tomorrow.

She said they are confident the store would surpass its donation of £948 from last year's event.

"We're hoping it will be much more. Everyone's really got behind it and the customers have been excellent, really backing the cause," she said.

Other groups from the store will also take part tomorrow, she said. People who work today and tomorrow will be support them by wearing pink.

More than 2,600 women are expected to take part in the event, with runs starting at 10.30am and 3pm round Durham University's Graham Sports Centre grounds, at Maiden Castle.

* Information on tomorrow's runs and details of places for the last of the six North-East Race for Life events, at Exhibition Park, on Newcastle's Town Moor, on Sunday, July 13, can be found at raceforlife.
