Customers spot gap in the craft markets
TWO women are hoping they
have spotted a gap in the market
after opening an arts shop in
Durham city centre.
Julie Beken and Susan Platten
opened Crafty Nook, in Durham
Indoor Market, after hearing of
the closure of City Art, in North
Road.
The two were regular customers
of the family-owned
store, which closed at Easter due
to declining footfall and rising
rents, and hope they can fill the
void it left.
Ms Beken said: "We decided to
open Crafty Nook directly in response
to the City Art shop closing.
"We had been regular customers
of the shop for many
years and we feel that arts and
crafts are very popular in the
city with tourists and locals
alike."
Crafty Nook stocks art and
crafts materials and specialises
in craft packs for entertaining
children.
Colin Wilkes, managing director
of Durham Markets, said:
"Crafty Nook is a valuable addition
to the range of goods we
offer in the Indoor Market and
we wish Julie and Susan well in
their new venture."
