PUPILS donned dentist-style uniforms to receive an award yesterday.

Dressed in white medical coats, the children at Wheatley Hill Primary Nursery Unit were presented with Healthy Teeth Awards, along with a new toothbrush.

The Healthy Teeth Award scheme was launched as part of a national programme aimed at targeting under five-yearolds to help reduce tooth decay.

Sandra Laws, project leader at County Durham and Darlington Primary Care Trust's oral health promotion team, said: "If early positive steps are taken to change children's sugary dietary habits and good-toothbrushing practice introduced as well, this will go a long way in improving young children's dental health."

After the presentation, Julie King, the primary care trust's oral health promotion co-ordinator, said: "The nursery has developed strong links to healthy eating and dental health, which is a foundation parents and children can build upon for many years.

"We want nursery children to eat healthily and to look after their teeth by encouraging them to drink water throughout the day and to eat fruit for snacks.

"We are delighted that the nursery's contribution has been recognised by this award."
