PARENTS and children are
being encouraged to get active
on their way to school by
using a park-and-stride
scheme.
The scheme, launched
yesterday, was set up at All
Saints RCVA Primary School,
Kitswell Road, Lanchester,
with the help of the Lanchester
Village Partnership and
Lanchester Social Club.
With the permission of
social club proprietor Richard
Young, an entrance to the club
car park has been created in
Lanchester Walk.
Parents who have to drive
their children to school are
being encouraged to use the
car park and walk the rest of
the journey, instead of parking
outside the school gates.
The scheme was suggested
during a meeting of the
Lanchester Village Partnership
as a way of reducing
congestion around the school.
Mike Gladstone, from the
partnership, said: "The
meeting was attended by
representatives from the
parish, district and county
councils, the school, social
club, community centre and
local businesses, which meant
we could develop a viable
scheme with support from
across the community."
The work was funded and
carried out by Durham County
Council as part of the school's
travel plan.
Mr Young said: "By reducing
the traffic congestion outside
the school and encouraging
parents and carers to park in
the social club car park, we
are improving the children's
safety, and the short walk
enables the pupils to have a
more active journey to school."
