Attempted robbery appeal

DETECTIVES are appealing for witnesses after a man tried to steal an elderly woman’s handbag in Newton Aycliffe.

The 84-year-old woman suffered injuries to her ribs when the robber pulled her to the ground as he attempted to make off with her bag.

The incident happened on Greenwell Road on Sunday February 5, at around 1.30pm.

The robber fled the scene empty handed in the direction of Central Avenue and headed towards the Thames Centre.

He is described as being 18 to 20-years-old and was wearing dark clothing.

Police are also keen to speak to a woman who helped the victim to her feet after the attack.

Det Con Anne Wraith, from Newton Aycliffe’s serious crime unit, said: "This was a particularly frightening attack, one that has left her shaken. "We are urging anyone with any information to come forward.

"We would urge the lady who assisted the victim to contact police as she may be able to help us identify the attacker."

Anyone with information should contact Durham police on 101 and ask to speak to Det Con Anne Wraith or call Crimestoppers on 0800-555111.
