Putting disabled drivers on right road

SIMPLE TIPS: Councillor Nicky Walker and Eric Chambers with leaflets offering advice to drivers with disabilities SIMPLE TIPS: Councillor Nicky Walker and Eric Chambers with leaflets offering advice to drivers with disabilities

DISABLED drivers have been getting tips on how to cope with the potential danger of a car breakdown.

Middlesbrough Council's Safe and Active Travel Team and Middlesbrough's Shopmobility Service have teamed up to raise awareness of the issue with simple tips. They are using a Highways Agency magazine, which has an emergency card to keep in a vehicle's glove box. It is packed with safety tips and journey planning advice.

Councillor Nicky Walker, the council's executive member for transport, said: "Finding yourself broken down, crashed or with a flat tyre on a major road can be a daunting prospect, but for people with a disability it can be especially difficult.

Hopefully, drivers with disabilities will find this information useful. It will help them travel safely and with the confidence to deal with any situation."

For more advice, call in the Shopmobility office, in the Hillstreet Centre, Middlesbrough.
