RUNNERS pounded the streets in glorious sunshine as they competed in a town’s 10k road race.

More than 3,000 participants of all abilities were cheered on by about 10,000 spectators who noisily showed their support while taking advantage of the warm weather yesterday.

And the world-famous Red Devils parachute team dropped in to give the 2010 Middlesbrough Tees Pride 10k an extra special start.

The sixth annual 10k road race took place along Hall Drive, Acklam Road, Ladgate Lane, Marton Road, Keith Road, Emerson Avenue and Green Lane.

It was won by Ian Hudspith with a time of 30 minutes 51 seconds, and the first female across the line was Rosie Smith from Durham City Harriers with a time of 35 minutes 31 seconds. First across the finish line for the Wheelchair 10k was, for the men, Brian Alldis in 23 minutes 52 seconds, and for the women, Jade Jones, who clocked in at 28 minutes 40 seconds.

Middlesbrough Football Club manager Gordon Strachan ran alongside former players Colin Cooper, Craig Hignett and Curtis Fleming to raise money for the Finlay Cooper Fund.

The charity, which has raised more than £100,000, was set up by former Boro star Colin Cooper and his wife, Julie, to help children’s causes after the tragic death of their young son. The event also included a 3k fun run and an elite mile race.
