£500,000 seized from canoe couple

Anne Darwin Anne Darwin

PROSECUTORS have recovered more than half a million pounds from the wife of back-from-the-dead canoeist John Darwin.

Darwin, 61, faked his own death in a canoeing accident in 2002 so his wife Anne, 60, could claim hundreds of thousands of pounds from insurance policies and pension schemes.

The couple, from Seaton Carew, near Hartlepool, were jailed at Teesside Crown Court in 2008 for the swindle, which deceived the police, a coroner, financial institutions and even their sons Mark and Anthony.

Watch the dramatic moment John Darwin gave himself up to police.

A confiscation hearing in 2009 was told that the Darwins benefited to the sum of £679,194.62 from the fraud, but at that time their realisable assets amounted to just under £592,000.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said today it has now recovered a total of £501,641.39 from the assets that Mrs Darwin held as a result of the scam.

This figure is lower because the value of property she owned in Panama has fallen as a result of the global economic crisis.

The money will now be repaid to the insurance companies and pension funds that were defrauded.

Kingsley Hyland, head of the CPSs north-east complex casework unit, said: "It has taken some time to sell the property in Panama but we are extremely pleased to have got through the very complex process of recovering this money from overseas.

"It is important that fraudsters see that not only will we prosecute them wherever possible, but we will also make every effort to retrieve their ill-gotten gains to return them to those they have defrauded."

Be warned, If you defraud the insurance company of £100K be prepared for a lengthy jail sentence, didn't spend much did they? However feel free to batter someone to death, assault prison officers to the point of maiming, kill innocent people whilst driving, terrorist acts are tolerable, repeat offenders, in general a total disrespect for law and order. It is time we as a nation, think long and hard at the next election about what kind of country we want to live in !
So the moral of the story: ensure you don't defraud or steal any monies from the insurance, you are guaranteed a custodial sentence !

Hey theft and particularly theft from the government or banking institutions have always been unfairly and unjustifiably punished. Plus I hate it when they describe this guy as the back from the dead canoeist. I knew, KNEW as soon as the story broke that he had come back after suffering amnesia that it was a complete load. So he didn't die, therefore didn't come back from the dead. It's like whenever a suppers scandal occurs and people stick the word "gate" after it.
The original "gate" scandal was obviously watergate. Which involved the watergate hotel, nothing to do with water. Just an example of second rate journalism. Bloodgate, tevesgate etc. Utter nonsense!

Totally agree with neilt63. Seeing as they have been stripped of all the assetts they own, the 500k reclaimed and given back to insurance companies will now be handed back out to the Darwins by the taxpayer - in benefits!
