A COMMUNITY centre has received the best present of all as it celebrates its 50th anniversary - a future.
West View Community Centre, in Hartlepool, was facing closure last year as part of plans by the council to balance its books following cuts in its Government grant.
But the centre was saved after non-profit-making organisations the West View Project and the West View Advice and Resource Centre teamed up to take it over on a long lease.
The celebration yesterday was nearly 50 years to the day since the centre originally opened and a cake in the shape of the centre was enjoyed community leaders and the public.
The West View Project runs a host of activities for young people, including youth clubs, watersports, orienteering, rock-climbing and woodland activities.
The West View Advice and Resource Centre provides a free, confidential advice on topics ranging from welfare and benefits to debt.
Va l Evans, West View Advice and Resource Centre manager, said: "This is a proud day for us."
