Hospice appeal to gardeners

GARDENERS are being asked to help out with a hospice’s annual fund raising campaign.

Every year, private gardens are opened up to the public to raise money for St Cuthbert’s Hospice, in Durham City.

In 2011, a total of 15 of the city’s best-kept gardens opened their gates to visitors, raising a much-needed £3,500 for the cause.

Scheme organiser Jade McArdle said: "Many of our hospice supporters are keen gardeners so it’s a fantastic way to raise money for the hospice whilst showing off their proud work.

"No matter how big or small the garden, I’d encourage anyone to get involved as visiting gardens can be a lovely way to while away a summer’s afternoon".

This year, the campaign will be sponsored by Lanchester Garden Centre, which is staging an event in its grounds on May 13 when visitors can browse the centre and enjoy some food in return for a donation to St Cuthbert's.

Ian McCallum, the garden centre manager said: "When we heard about Open Gardens we thought it would be an excellent campaign for the centre to support."

Already, 15 gardens have confirmed their will join the scheme, including Crook Hall, in Durham City, as well as others in Gilesgate, Shincliffe and Consett.

The hospice will also open its own five-acre gardens on July 28 for the annual Picnic in the Park event.
