A PENSIONER is travelling half-way round the world to climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge in aid of a North-East hospice.

Ken Allday, 79, will take on the Australian challenge in November, to raise money for St Cuthbert’s Hospice, in Durham City, where his late wife, Joan, spent her final days last year.

Mr Allday, a retired firefighter from Newton Hall, Durham, said: "Joan loved the hospice - she called it next door to heaven and described the staff as angels.

"I wanted to do something totally unique to give back to them for everything they did for Joan and everything they continue to do for me."

Mr Allday will be joined by his son Stephen, 56, daughter-in-law Janice, 45, and friend Doreen, 72.

They will climb along the iconic bridge’s outer arch, to 134m above the city’s harbour.

Jane McArdle, from the hospice, said: "It’s clear how much the hospice means to Ken and for him to do something as unique as the Sydney Bridge climb is incredible - the challenge is so inspirational.

"We are very grateful to Ken for supporting us this way and wish him the best of luck for the climb."
