A LONG-SERVING former councillor who still fights for older people in the community has been recognised.
Ron Dickie, 79, has given 60 years’ service in local government, either as a member of the workforce or as a councillor.
His award of an MBE is for services to the community in Durham.
Born in Ushaw Moor, near Durham City, he later moved to Langley Moor and to Nevilles Cross.
He began working in the health department for Durham County Council as a teenager and later worked in social services for South Tyneside Council, after it became a metropolitan borough following local government reorganisation, in 1974.
He has been a school governor and involved in running youth clubs and other local organisations.
As a Durham city councillor, he represented Nevilles Cross ward as an independent member until the authority ceased to exist in April last year (2009), when the county council gained unitary status.
