FREEMASONS this morning handed over £5,000 to a charity which helps former servicemen and their families.

George Clark, assistant provincial grand master of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Durham, visited the Durham branch of the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA), in Old Elvet, Durham City, to present the cash to Colin Watson.

At the annual general meeting of The Freemasons Grand Charity held in June, members decided to donate £250,000 nationally to SSAFA, with the money distributed around the country and handed over to support local branches of the forces charity.

Laura Chapman, chief executive of The Freemasons' Grand Charity said: "The immensely valuable work carried out by SSAFA Forces Help is widely supported within the masonic community, and this latest grant is further evidence of our benevolent commitment in support of the armed services".

The Durham Branch of SSAFA covers County Durham, Darlington and Hartlepool.
