SCHOOL pupils have given their backing to a new tree planting campaign.

Youngsters from St Joseph’s RC Primary School, in Durham, donned leaf masks to show their support for the More Trees, More Good campaign, run by the Woodland Trust charity.

The campaign’s target is for 20 million native trees to be planted in the UK every year for the next 50 years.

The charity says the UK is one of the least wooded countries in Europe and 72 per cent of people want more trees to be planted.

Margaret Wilkinson, from St Joseph’s school, said: "It is crucial for school children to learn about the importance of looking after the environment and particularly planting and conserving trees.

"More Trees, More Good is a great way for young people to get involved in tree planting and we look forward to getting stuck in with the Woodland Trust."

The Woodland Trust is currently creating a new 80,000-tree forest Low Burn Hall Farm, near Durham.
