A CABINET minister and a punk have visited the region to join forces against racism.

Home Secretary Alan Johnson and Irish punk rocker Feargal Sharkey spoke at the annual Hope, Not Hate rally at Trimdon Labour Club, in County Durham, on Saturday.

The group campaigns against far right parties such as the BNP and National Front, which have targeted the region with renewed vigour since Labour’s slide in the polls.

Mr Sharkey, who found fame with Seventies punk outfit The Undertones, said he did not back any political party, but supported multiculturalism.

The Teenage Kicks singer and chief executive of UK Music said: “What makes up the whole fabric of this wonderful place we live in is the extraordinary mixture, that we have – different ideas, cultures, colours and religions.

“We have had people coming to this country for the last By Rachel Wearmouth rachel.wearmouth@nne.co.uk 4,000 years and if it wasn’t for that, we would not be what we are today.”

Councillors, trade union members and residents turned out in force to air their views and discuss ways of counteracting far right politics and racism.

Mr Johnson said far right parties offered simple solutions to complicated problems such as immigration and that Labour was working to deal with the issue.

He said: “The trouble with the immigration debate at the moment is we do not have a soundbite.”

He arrived at noon at the club, famous for being where former Prime Minister and MP for Sedgefield Tony Blair celebrated his party’s landslide victory in 1997.

Mr Johnson commended Hope, Not Hate for its work and said: “In this country, people have consistently refused to pick up the message of hatred and intolerance.

“I think the BNP is popular across the country at a time when unemployment is high, and their message is to say it is the fault of people with brown faces or this person.

“We need to spread the message of Hope, Not Hate and face up to them in a united way.”

Clare Williams, chairwoman of the Northern TUC Race Advisory Group, said the economic climate was also a problem.

She said: “The current recession and the burdens felt by ordinary working people are being used by these parties to try and persuade us that (the BNP’s) solutions are the best answer.”

Sedgefield MP Phil Wilson said campaigners against far right parties needed to do more work.

He said: “We may not have the sense of community that we used to have, but it is still there and there are community groups that we need to support.”

J Moffatt (above) and people like the Walkers represent a tiny tiny minority of the people of the UK. They pretend to support our troops but conveniently forget that millions of our forefathers gave up their lives in WW2 in order to defeat the facist filth that they pretend to represent today.

They pretend they are not racist (thats a laugh too) They pretend they speak for the people but it is only themselves who are convinced.
They are a scab on society and a disgrace to the human race. They cannot accept that people of a different colour or ethnicity have a right to live in the UK. These are sick people.

Derek your Quackers.Note you didnt argue with me about Immigration and Crime. When Shria Law takes over you'll probably be first to cry.
The only facists in this country are the left who deny anyone free speech that dares to disagree.
PS.The Walker brothers actually served this country.

Over the years I and others have tried to get things done within the town where I live. Which include playgrounds for children, decent facilites for the young and projects which would create jobs and get the away from a path leading to drink, crime and drugs. I've gotten nowhere.

But it's only because of the real threat posed by the BNP that the council has agreed to take its finger out and actually do something.

Alan Johnson is definitely worthy of some 'teenage kicks' - preferably from a size 10 Doc Marten.

Dear J Moffatt - No I did not argue with you about Immigration or Crime as you did not mention it in your post, not very bright are you?. We all know why you despise 'the left' (as you put it)it's because 'the left' are raising awareness about the filth and bile that the BNP put out.
The left have got the measure of you and the threat you pose to all of us who enjoy living in a multi cultural society. Fortunately you are in a tiny minority. Get a life and appreciate all cultures and stop telling lies.I did not speak English when I first came into this country and neither did you (work that one out if you can)

Did anyone watch last nights edition of Channel 4’s “Dispatches“?

It showed that Muslim extremists have infiltrated the three main political parties with the intent of placing extremists in positions of power, from where they can legally impose Islamic culture and Sharia Law onto the British public.

Ultimately turning Britain into an Islamic state and with it the extermination of democracy, British values, culture, traditions and the oppression of all non-Muslims.

Derek within Britain we each have the right of freedom of speech, but who is the greater danger the BNP or Muslim extremists?

Have some commenst been deleted here?

Haven’t seen the programme CT – might watch it online if I get the time.
The title is a bit of a giveaway, isn’t it? “Britain’s Islamic Republic” – as if such a thing was a reality! It isn’t even a possibility.
I don’t want to see an Islamic republic in Britain, nor a Nazi state run by the BNP. Fortunately, there is no chance of either. As to whether the BNP or the Islamic extremists are more dangerous, this comes down to which is most likely to gain power (neither, obviously) and which exerts the most widespread and pernicious influence (probably the BNP.)
Meanwhile, here’s the MCB press release:

2nd March 2010

In a statement following the broadcast of a Channel 4 documentary on 1 March, media secretary of the Muslim Council of Britain, Tufael Ahmad said:

“Last night's Dispatches fronted by Andrew Gilligan has once again resurrected stereotypes. Using out of context quotations, he echoes the rhetoric of far-right extremists, that British Muslims are somehow foreign, alien, extremist and imposing their way of life on the others."

"The core of the programme accuses the Islamic Forum Europe (IFE) and the East London Mosque, of fostering 'Islamist' extremism and that the IFE has an undue and pernicious influence over the politics of our country."

"Both claims are a gross and highly insulting misrepresentation of bodies that have done much to serve the common good. Both have a long and proud record of openly and actively spoken in favour of seeking common cause with all Britons, and have initiated projects that have served all people, regardless of faith."

"The central charge made by the programme is that both institutions are guilty of 'entryism', a curious accusation at a time when British Muslims are positively encouraged to take full part in the civic and democratic life of our nation. By taking part in politics, Muslim institutions are no different from people of other faiths who gain strength and inspiration from their faith to focus on shared interests and values.

"The message from this programme is clear, British Muslims have no right to take part in this country's great democratic culture. Other than the far-right, such a divisive message should not resonate with reasoned people who believe in democracy and a plural society."

"The programme also takes aim at the Muslim Council of Britain itself, casting doubt and aspersions on the organisation's diversity and its leaders."

"We reject entirely the allegation that the MCB is ‘dominated’ by any organisation/s. The MCB, with over 500 affiliates, has a rigorous election process with elected officials from a wide range of Islamic backgrounds. Simply put, there is no scope whatsoever, real or perceived, for any affiliate/s or group of affiliates to dominate the decision-making process. The programme has failed to
provide even a single shred of evidence of how ‘undue influence’ by any affiliate or group of affiliates has actually
been exercised."

I attended the event, & while it wasn't perfect it was good overall.

Sharkey spoke brilliantly about confronting racists, & the music industry. Gr8.
