A CATHEDRAL is to open a new temporary bookshop next month.
Durham Cathedral will open a shop in the entrance to its Great Kitchen on Monday, March 1.
The announcement comes after the Saint Stephen the Great Trust closed its Great Kitchen bookshop unexpectedly on Friday, January 22.
The Cathedral had ordered the Trust, run by US brothers Phil and Mark Brewer, to vacate the premises by May, amid claims it had left the shop, once described as the best theological bookshop in the world, a shadow of its former self.
A statement on the Durham Cathedral website described Trust’s management period as "three unhappy years".
"It is the hope of the Cathedral Chapter that the Cathedral Shop under Cathedral management will re-establish itself very quickly as a resource for all the churches and we look forward once again to be able to meet the needs of the region."
Orders are now being taken for books and church supplies. For more information, email: theshop@durhamcathedral.co.uk The temporary shop is not opening in the Great Kitchen due to roof problems.
The Cathedral hopes to open a permanent shop opposite its Undercroft restaurant next year.
