New head for energy institute

AN academic has been appointed to research the future of green energy technologies such as clean coal and carbon capture.

Jon Gluyas has been appointed Professor in Geoenergy, Carbon Capture and Storage at Durham University’s newly-created Durham Energy Institute.

The institute has been set up to find ways to create affordable, reliable, clean energy for heat, power and transport.

Prof Gluyas said: "I am delighted to be joining Durham University and in particular the new Energy Institute.

"I believe my skills developed from a career as a scientist in the petroleum industry will enable me to assist in the development and leadership of DEI as well as improving our links to industry".

Prof Gluyas, a geologist who spent many years working for oil giant BP, is also taking on the prestigious role of Chair of the British Geological Survey Board.
