STUDENTS from a North-East university held a demonstration over the weekend to demand action to tackle climate change.
Academics in Durham and residents surrounded Palace Green lawn in front of the Cathedral dressed in blue to highlight the need for political and social change with regards to the environment.
The demonstrators performed a Mexican Wave to represent the potential for rising sea levels if action is not taken.
The event, known as the Durham Wave, will mimic the London protest on December 5 and the message is aimed at the leaders who are gathering in Copenhagen in order to discuss global political action on climate change.
One of the organisers, Hayley Spann, said: "We are urging the decision makers to formulate a political framework that effectively deals with the problem of climate change that takes into account the importance of this issue to the world's poorest countries.
"It shows that people in the North-East are concerned with global issues and that if we work together as a community we can convey this at a local level."
