FREEZING fog and snow blitzed the North East yesterday as the region shivered under early wintery weather.

Motorists faced blizzard conditions at Crookburn Bridge, on the County Durham and Cumbria border, making driving conditions difficult.

A blanket of snow fell at Harwood, Teesdale, County Durham, leaving Swaledale sheep shivering.

Northumbria Police warned motorists to take care as freezing fog descended across the region and some roads were left slippery with ice.

Some drivers at Ashgill Head, Teesdale, were also caught out by the cold snap.

A police spokeswoman said: “We’re advising motorists to take extra care as freezing fog and ice is affecting a number of roads.

"Drivers are advised to moderate their speed to match the conditions and try not to brake sharply, instead decelerate using the gears."
