Darlington railway pioneer Joseph Pease and Quakers club crest depicted

ADDICTS have helped to create a stunning mural at a football ground as part of a year-long arts project.

The masterpiece at The Northern Echo Darlington Arena, made entirely of plastic bottle tops, depicts Darlington railway pioneer Joseph Pease in front of the Quakers club crest.

It will be displayed at the Arena for six months to help promote the history of Darlington as well as the need for people to recycle.

Artist Yvonne Preston and clients in Darlington from the North East Council on Addictions (NECA) worked on the project.

Ms Preston helped those involved from the day care service at NECA to plan the project, find materials and come up with a final design.

She said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed working with this group of people. They made me feel very welcome, shown lots of great personality and commitment and really taken ownership of their work.”

Trish Stephenson, of NECA, said: “Our day care clients are delighted to have created this work for the benefit of the community, promotion of the football club and to promote recycling in Darlington.

“Their dedication and teamwork is commendable.

The sense of good citizenship and community involvement is something we strive to achieve with an otherwise excluded group.”

Funding was secured through the Prince’s Trust.

Age Concern, the National Probation Service, homeless organisation 700 Club and The Elmfield Drugs Centre were also involved in the project.
