ONE of Darlington's most unpopular buildings could be torn down within a month, according to the designer of a new housing estate to be built on the site.
Hopetown House on Brinkburn Road has become a drain on police, fire and council resources over the last six months as thieves, vandals and drug users targeted the former Whessoe building.
But after Darlington Borough Council's planning committee granted planning permission for a new 96 home estate on the site, the owners of the building can bring the bulldozers in.
Simon Fowler of project architects Leigh Cooper Associates, said: "It could take a month or so before work can begin.
"The designs are good, high-quality and will be of long-term benefit to the area."
