Retirement home helps boys win promotion

A SPONSORSHIP deal linking the generations has resulted in promotion for both sides.

Middleton Hall Retirement Village agreed to buy a new kit for the village team at the start of last season.

And the deal proved profitable when Middleton Rangers under 14s side topped their league to win promotion.

The retirement home decided to sponsor the team because two of the residents are former footballers themselves and some had family members who have been members of the club.

Raymond Dovey, 88, and Edward Perry, 81, who joined the line up for a celebratory photograph, both played in their youth.

And Mr Dovey was a goalkeeper who won trials with Leeds City Boys and later played for his regiment's team in the Southern India Cup during the Second World War.

Middleton Rangers Under 14s won the Teesside Junior Football Alliance fourth division this season, and will play in the third division next term.

Club manager Malcolm Turnbull said: "They are a great bunch of alds and the good thing is that 12 of the 18 come from Middleton St George, so the fact that Middleton Hall is our sponsor really keeps the village flag flying wherever we play."
