POOR weather failed to dampen
spirits as people enjoyed a Darlington
park's annual fun day.
Despite steady drizzle yesterday
afternoon, hundreds of children
and their families flocked to
the South Park Fun Day.
Long queues formed outside
many of the attractions as people
made the most of what has become
a popular event in the
park's calendar.
The park reopened after a
£3.9m restoration project in 2006.
The re-opening event proved so
successful that it was decided to
make it a permanent fixture -
this is the second time a fun day
has been held.
Attractions on offer included
archery, a climbing wall, face
painting, Punch and Judy, a
bouncy castle and a variety of
street theatre.
The sponsor of the event, Newton
Aycliffe-based company John
Wade Group, also had a display
featuring a number of their vehicles.
Middlesbrough Jazz and Blues
Orchestra provided entertainment
throughout the day.
Jeff Dawson, the events manager
for Darlington Borough
Council, said he felt the day had
been a great success.
He said: "Sometimes when the
weather isn't quite right it has an
impact on the event, but it's encouraging
to see how many people
have come today.
"There's been a lot going on
during the day and there's been
a lot of people coming and going
throughout.
"I think the park is quite a
draw in itself. It's a lovely park
and I think it's something to be
proud of.
"The Punch and Judy has been
very popular and the balloon
modeller has had a good queue of
people all day.
"This is an event which we
hold on a regular basis now and
it's become part of the attractions
on the bank holiday.
"Hopefully it'll keep growing."
