A DARLINGTON school has won a swimming gala for the first time in its history.

Carmel RC College has entered the Darlington School Swimming Gala on a number of occasions, but has never won a major trophy before.

This year, the school won the boys' and girls' championships giving them the title of overall school champions.

Both the boys' and girls' competitions were very close, with Carmel boys beating Longfield by two points and Carmel girls pipping Polam to the title by a single point.

Carmel won the overall championship by 23 points.

The school does not have its own pool and uses the pool at Branksome to train after lessons.

The year eight boys' team also won every event open to them.

A spokeswoman for the school said: "The Carmel students proved what can be achieved through hard work, the will to improve and allround teamwork and could not have done it without the support of the PE staff at the college, who gave up their spare time to train and motivate the pupils."
