Party chaos: 'It wasn't our fault'

A BAD NIGHT: Mark Lamb and Katheryn Tunstall outside The Grange yesterday A BAD NIGHT: Mark Lamb and Katheryn Tunstall outside The Grange yesterday

THE organisers of a teenage party promoted on Facebook as the “biggest and best in town” that descended into chaos insisted last night: “It wasn’t our fault.”

Mark Lamb told The Northern Echo he had been made to feel like a laughing stock after more than 600 young people turned up for a party at The Grange, in Darlington, on Wednesday night.

The 16-year-old claims he was told by the owner of the bar, in Grange Road, that it could hold as many as 600 people.

A spokesman for The Grange previously said the venue could officially hold only 450 people.

Speaking to The Northern Echo, Mr Lamb, said: “I was told that it was a 600 person venue, so by selling 500 tickets I didn’t think I was doing anything wrong.

“Five hundred and twelve people were counted in, and 100 were turned away – more people turned up than expected.

“People were getting thrown out for being rowdy and the bouncers were letting them back in.

“The bouncers called it off because there were too many people – there was no dispute with the DJ, like the owner has said.”

Councillor Cyndi Hughes, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for children and young people, last night said she would campaign to make sure provisions were in place for underage events.

She said: “If a club hosts an event for underage people there need to be safeguards in place and special training for door and bar staff. I’ll be campaigning to get these provisions in place.”

The teenage event was organised by Mr Lamb, a student at Carmel College, and Katheryn Tunstall, 18, a student at Darlington College.

About 600 teenagers turned up at the bar on Wedneday night to attend the event, called Atmosphere.

It was advertised on Facebook as The Biggest and Best Party in Darlington.

The party, which began at 8pm, came to an abrupt end only an hour later.

Witnesses said people were then pushing and shoving to get into the club, there was fighting inside and the young people who had been sent out by door staff managed to get back in.

After the youths were ejected, other fights broke out among the youngsters, who were hanging around in Grange Road.

Police were called and an arrest was made for drunkenness and a 15-year-old girl was taken to hospital by her parents because she was suffering from the effects of alcohol consumption.

Mr Lamb added: “People have been laughing at me and saying on Facebook that they didn’t enjoy the night.

“But it’s not my fault – I put a lot of effort into organising that event – I did my best to make it as good as possible.”

Acting Neighbourhood Inspector for Darlington police, Dave Barker, said: “We will be speaking with the young man and his parents. We want to make sure nothing like this happens again.”

The Northern Echo understands licensing officers from Darlington Borough Council will also be investigating the cicrumstances.

No one from The Grange was available for comment.

What does a 16yr old boy think hes doing trying to book 600 tanked up youths into into 1 venue.
The boys a fool, and his parents should be ashamed of themselves, I am sure they didnt bring him up to believe in such social fantasies!

Shouldn't the question be, why did the club owner allow a 16 year old to organise this event?
The place was obviously overwhelmed, 500 teenagers turning up in such a short space of time. If any were drunk, they shouldn't have been allowed in should they? It's pretty obvious.

My son was at this party and i didn,t believe him that a 16 yr old had organised it.Should never have been allowed to make the booking. The Grange was only interested in making money.
I drove down Grange Road picking my son up and it was terrifying as road was crowded with teenagers who wouldn,t move out of the road for my car.

i cant understand why everyone is blaming the young lad surely this was the club to blame. as i understand he sold 515 tickets for a venue he was told held 600 even though the capacity was only 450 and there was no alcohol on sale inside the venue how was he to know more than 600 would turn up,at 16 why cant he be allowed to organise an event if there was no alcohol on sale inside the building surely he cant be blamed for other people buying drink from corner shops and turning up drunk.

Stop hating on Mark, he was doing it with good intentions of a good night, it's not his fault people took advantage of the situation. This is why teenagers have nothing to do, because every good thing that is organised for us is ruined by people who take advantage of it.

how is he a fool trying to get 600 teens of the street for one night he did his best and you horrible person his parents should be ashamed of him why because he made one mistake? and how is it a social fantasy he sorted it but it went wrong why don't you do it prove us wrong and see if it works out for you because i doubt you'd be able to pull it off. At least he tried to do something for us teens no adult ever attempted to try and help teens out they just blame us for everything that goes wrong in this bloody town we wouldn't be on the streets if someone actually tried.

He should have been charged with "child endangerment", doesnt he think he has an obligation to check their ages!

The parents of these "future members of society" need to take responsiblty for their nearest and dearest!

I think you are all being very narrow minded
All Mark did was try to organise a party for all of his friends to enjoy, the bouncers are paid to provide a service which they failed on the said night as they were letting people in without a ticket and who were clearly very drunk and under age the parents of each of the children who were let of the house in such a drunken state are as much to blame as anyone, they asked their parents for money to go to the party and i can only assume the parent new where they were going.
Not to mention the outfits they were all photographed in.
such a shame Marks name is being draged through the mud, discusting
