THOUSANDS of trees are going to be planted across Darlington to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Friends groups from parks and nature reserves across the borough are taking part in a campaign inspired by the Woodland Trust to plant a tree for the Diamond Jubilee.
The groups have teamed up with Darlington Borough Council countryside rangers to plant more than 2,000 saplings in nine different areas.
As well as the rangers, local schools and organisations will be working with the friends of Rockwell and Red Hall nature reserves, North Park, South Park, Green Park, West Park and Eastbourne Park.
Margs Graham (CORR), from the Friends of Rockwell said, “It’s great to be able to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee by planting a living legacy for the local community.”
In a year-long celebration, six million trees will be planted across the UK as part of the Jubilee Woods project.
The Woodland Trust has set a challenge of getting one million trees in the ground in February 2012 as a start to the Jubilee year and is appealing for help.
Anyone who would like to help, or for more information about being a part of the project contact Darlington rangers on 01325 383099 or email Deborah.hall@darlington.gov.uk.
