ALLOTMENT holders in a village could get greater control over the way the sites are run.
Hurworth Parish Council are supporting moves for allotment holders at the Strait Lane and Grange sites to become self-governing, by forming an association with its own consititution.
The association would manage the day to day running of the allotments, which are owned by the parish council, and would be mainly made up of allotment holders.
Coun Val Hughes said: “I think it would be a big step forward if we did this. I would back that.”
Members agreed they would support the move and expressed a wish to have one committee member on the association.
The council heard a meeting will take place on Monday, February 13, where allotment holders will discuss setting up an association.
Coun Peter Foster volunteered to attend the meeting on behalf of the parish council.
