A STRETCH of road suffered its second accident in successive nights yesterday.
A woman had to be cut from her car after a collision with a road sweeper on close to the Great Burdon roundabout yesterday.
The crash between a red Hyundai and the roadsweeper happened on the eastbound carriageway Darlington Road, between Great Burdon and the A66, on a slip road towards Sadberge, at 4.10pm yesterday. (Fri) Two fire crews from Darlington and a special rescue unit from Bishop Auckland attended the scene and cut the roof off the Hyundai to free the woman, who was treated for arm and back injuries.
The road was closed for more than an hour while the rescue took place and the scene cleared.
The accident took place a stone’s throw from where an Arriva bus lost control and was in collision with a 4x4 Jeep on Thursday evening at approximately the same time.
Yesterday, the vehicle standards agency VOSA confirmed it had been asked by police to investigate the accident which may have occurred due to a mechanical failure with the bus.
Nigel Featham, managing director for Arriva North East, said: “At Arriva North East the safety of our passengers, employees and other road users is paramount.
“We can confirm that one of our vehicles was involved in an incident on Thursday.
“We are currently working closely with the police and carrying out investigations in order to understand exactly what happened.”
