8:26am Friday 3rd September 2010

ON the sixth anniversary of the disappearance of a sports fan, police continue to appeal for information.

Melvyn Gamblin disappeared during the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

Mr Gamblin, who lived in Darlington and was 37 when he went missing, had been to the previous four Olympics.

He suffers from ME and occasionally had blackouts. Police feared he may have had had a blackout and become disorientated.

Mr Gamblin travelled to Athens for the Olympics on August 9, 2004. He watched a number of events, including athletics, swimming and rowing, and the last time his family heard from him was after he watched Great Britain win the 4x100m relay gold on August 28.

He was seen leaving his hotel on September 3, the day he was due to return to Darlington. However, he never checked out and several items were found in his room.

Mr Gamblin is about 5ft 10in, medium build with short, brown hair. He wears glasses. Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0346-60-60-365, or the Missing People charity on 0500-700-700.
