Radio man's Afghan mission

THE NEW programme controller of a local radio station is looking forward to a quieter life – after recently returning home from Afghanistan.

James Horspool is a major in the Territorial Army and was deployed with a combat camera team in Afghanistan producing film for media outlets.

Part of his remit was to train senior officers how to work effectively with the media and polish up their interview technique.

Following the deployment he took a brief period of recuperation before re-entering the world of commercial radio as programme control for Star Radio, which broadcasts to Darlington and the surrounding area.

Mr Horspool, who currently lives in Ripon with his wife Alexandra and a menagerie of pets including a wild peacock, said: “I feel absolutely privileged to have been able to be a very small part of the vitally important work that is going on in Afghanistan.

“My time there was physically and mentally challenging but incredibly satisfying and I am now looking forward to working in a completely different environment with the team at Star Radio.”

Star Radio was launched in November 2009 and occupies the area of 3 former stations - Durham FM, Alpha Radio and Minster Northallerton.
